Handicaps & Results
Welcome to Dalgety Bay Sailing Club’s Handicap pages. Here you will find information on the current handicaps being used for the club racing. Also there are links to other pages related to dinghy and keelboat handicaps. Mixed fleet club racing is handicapped using the Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme. Each year I calculate the handicaps that helmsmen and women are sailing to. To do this I assume that all the boats in a race finish together and then work out the handicaps that all give the same corrected time. Since these are applied to each person, then they are effectively personal handicaps. We all know that things can go wrong, the odd capsize, sailing the wrong course etc. Including such poor results in would produce an artificially slow handicap. To counter this results that are over the bogey time are discarded. I have set the bogey time at 105% of average corrected finish time. This will explain why you will see less races counting towards your handicap than you sailing in. I may do further analysis of these results. If you have suggestions how to calculate a fairer handicap when there are only a few widely differing results then let me know. If you want to see how this compares with the national picture; check out the RYAs Portsmouth Yardstick handicaps. There are many other sites on the Web with useful sailing handicap information, try some of these : Open keelboat events on the Forth are run under the Forth Yacht Clubs Association (FYCA). They have their own handicaps that are used for these events. Our fellow sailors across the water at Port Edgar Yacht Club use a system of rolling handicaps. |
